Local people invited to find out more about scheme

Local people in the Mansel Street area of Swansea are being invited to view the plans for Wales & West Utilities’ scheme to bring a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.

Plans for the five week investment programme will be available at a public drop-in event, being held at:

  • Committee Room 3, Second Floor, County Hall, Oystermouth Road, Swansea, SA1 3SN between 4pm and 7pm on Thursday 9 July.

Members of the project team will also be on hand at the drop-in event to answer any questions on the project and people are encouraged to come along and see for themselves what is planned.

The work will begin on Monday 20 July and will see Wales & West Utilities replace more than 350 metres of old metal gas pipes with new long lasting plastic ones, together with approximately 140 service connections supplying gas to homes and businesses on Mansel Street. This work ensures the area continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and is essential to support the area’s growth and development.

In advance of work Wales & West Utilities has worked with the local authority highways department which has agreed all traffic management plans.

So that the general public, road users and the workforce is kept safe whilst work is ongoing, it has been agreed that temporary traffic lights will be in place for the duration.

Some bus routes may also be affected and further information can be obtained from the local bus company.

Wales & West Utilities First Line Manager Robert Barber, who will manage this scheme, said:

“We know that working on a key route into Swansea city centre is not ideal but this scheme is essential to make sure the area continues to receive a safe and reliable gas supply and support the growth of the area into the future.

“We have worked closely with the local highways authority in planning this work and although the traffic lights on Mansel Street will be disruptive in the short term, it is the only way we can carry out this work safely and efficiently.”

This work is part of the company’s multi-million-pound 30-year mains replacement programme, across Wales and the south west, which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years.
