Wales & West Utilities has started a £862,000 project to upgrade part of the gas network in the Crow Bridge area of Cullompton.

The investment work begins today (29 July) and, barring any engineering difficulties, it will finish during the winter 2025. The work is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Devon County Council, Cullompton Town Council and the local community to plan the scheme, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place as the works progress. This currently includes:

  • A road closure on Tiverton Road (29 July – 30 August)
  • Four-way traffic lights on Crow Bridge (12 August – 27 September)
  • Four-way traffic lights on Swallow Way (2 - 20 September)
  • Three-way lights on Clover Drive and Tanners Close (16 September – 4 October)
  • Work will be taking place on Shortlands Road (2 September – 25 October)
  • Road closure on Hammett Road (2 September – 4 October)
  • From 14 October, work will be taking place along:
    • Fosterlea, Shortlands Road, Bilbie Close, Bockland Close, Crow Bridge, Forcefield Road, Gatehouse Close, Knowle Close, Langlands Road, Manitoba Gardens, Manning Avenue, Salway Close and Spicer Close.

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:

“follows our work a few years ago in the Fore Street area of the town.

We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Cullompton. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.
