Wales & West Utilities is set to start the latest phase of its £500,000 gas pipe investment work in the Fernhill area of Abercwmboi which will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.

Starting week commencing 27 February the work will involve upgrading over 1.5km of old metal pipes to new plastic ones to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area. The company anticipates this essential work will be complete by the end of the summer.

The work will involve upgrading gas pipes along Bronallt Terrace, Cardiff Road, John Street and Park View Terrace. In advance of the work the Wales & West Utilities project team will be speaking to residents and local businesses to understand and accommodate their needs.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to plan the work and to keep disruption to the local community and local road users to a minimum. It has been agreed that whilst work is ongoing, two-way traffic lights and road closures on adjoining roads will be in place for short durations, where necessary. All plans will be relayed to local residents and businesses while diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for Wales, Francis Kirk, is managing the work and said:

“We know that working in areas like Abercwmboi is not ideal, but it really is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.  We’ll be working hard to make sure that the work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible whilst also keeping disruption to a minimum.

“Our team will be knocking on doors in the area to speak to local people and businesses and answer any questions they may have. We’re very aware of the effect that our work can have on communities and commuters and we’re working closely with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience.”
