Wales & West Utilities is investing  £280,000 in replacing more than 2km of old metal gas pipes in Canton, Cardiff with new plastic ones to make sure homes and businesses in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas for years to come.

Since the work in the area started in October we have laid new gas pipes on Lansdowne Avenue East and part of Sanatorium Road. We are now able to confirm our plans for the next stage of work on Sanatorium Road and Lansdown Road.

This stage of work has been divided into three phases:

  • Phase One will involve laying 300m of new gas pipe on Lansdowne Road from the junction of Beda Road to the junction with Sanatorium Road. This work will start on 11 January and barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties, should be completed within three weeks. While we are working, a temporary lane closure will be in place on Lansdowne Road between numbers 83 and 155, and parking will be restricted.
  •  Phase Two will involve laying 230m of new gas pipe on Sanatorium Road from the junction of Lansdowne Road toward Lansdowne Avenue. This work will start on 1 February and barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties, should be completed within five weeks. During this phase, a temporary lane closure will be in place on Sanatorium Road and there will be no access on to Sanatorium Road from Lansdowne Road. A diversion route will be clearly signposted. Access for pedestrians will be maintained at all times.
  •  Phase Three will involve turning off an existing gas pipe on Sanatorium Road. This work will start after Phase Two is finished and barring any unforeseen engineering difficulties, should be completed by 24 March 2015. During this phase, a temporary lane closure will be in place on Sanatorium Road and there will be no access on to Sanatorium Road from Lansdowne Road. A diversion route will be clearly signposted. Access for pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

At the request of City of Cardiff Council, we will then suspend our work, before returning later in 2016 to complete the final stage of work in this area.

The new long-lasting plastic pipes will have a lifespan of more than 80 years and will make sure homes and businesses in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas now and in the future.

Wales & West Utilities Melanie Hole, Programme Controller for East Wales, said:

“We know that working on a strategic route is not ideal – but it really is essential to make sure homes and businesses in the area continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas now and in the future. We’ve worked closely with City of Cardiff Council and local schools in planning this work, and to do what we can to minimise disruption and inconvenience as much as possible.

“The lane closures are needed to make sure road users, pedestrians and our workforce is kept safe during this scheme. We would like to thank people in advance for their cooperation during this essential work – and can assure you that our teams will be working as safely and as quickly as we can to get this done as soon as possible.”

This scheme is part of the company’s multi-million-pound 30-year gas pipe replacement programme, across Wales and the south west of England, which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years.

Wales & West Utilities provides the gas emergency service across Wales and the south west of England. If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night.
