apprentices

Gas emergency and pipeline service Wales & West Utilities is to recruit twenty-five new apprentices to work across Wales and the south west of England.

The new intake of recruits is part of the company’s commitment to investing in colleagues to make sure they have the skills, confidence and innovative thinking to help build a business that is fit to deliver for customers long into the future.

The new apprentices will support the company’s drive to continue to deliver outstanding customer service in maintaining the gas network that serves 7.5m people across Wales and the south west of England.

They will be based across the company’s operating area and the three year apprenticeship programme will help them develop the skills to deliver a fast, efficient service that will keep customers safe and warm with a gas supply they can rely on for years to come.

This year’s recruitment comes after the company took on twenty two apprentices in 2015, pursuing its aim of attracting more young people into the gas industry. The 2016 intake will focus on the companies Build & Repair teams that maintain existing gas equipment and lay new gas supply pipes, as well as Mechanical Engineers and Electrical and Instrumentation Engineers for Network Services teams who maintain the control systems of the gas network.

The apprenticeship opportunities will be advertised through the company’s website and social media channels as well as through local schools, colleges and Job Centre Plus.

Anyone who thinks they have what it takes to help Wales & West Utilities keep 7.5m people safe and warm can apply and you can see profiles of last year’s apprentice intake.

A selection of applicants will be invited to assessment centres in June 2016, and the successful candidates will start their induction at Wales & West Utilities’ £3 million training Academy in Treforest, south Wales, in September.

Wales & West Utilities Director of Human Resources Sarah Hopkins said: “Designing our business to meet the challenges of the future will make sure that we can continue to keep our customers safe and warm. Recruiting the next generation of gas engineers and training them to deliver the highest levels of gas safety is a key part of this.

We have a reputation for providing outstanding levels of customer service and we are counting on our new recruits to help maintain these levels into the future.”

Wales & West Utilities, the gas emergency and pipeline service, takes pride in serving Wales and the south west of England. If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night.

The company also has a multi-million pound, 30-year gas pipe investment programme which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years, to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply now and in the future.
