Wales & West Utilities supports Penygarn pupils with gas safety education

Posted: 11/05/2026

Wales & West Utilities has worked with Penygarn Primary School to deliver important gas safety information to more than 250 pupils to help keep their families and loved ones safe and warm at home.

Gas ambassadors from the gas emergency and pipeline service visited the school as part of its project to upgrade the gas pipes in the Channel View area of the village. In addition to the educational support, the team made a contribution to the school to assist with planned renovations to its outdoor learning and play areas, which will help benefit pupils’ wellbeing and development.

The sessions, which were held for pupils in year 2 - 6, helped drive home the simple steps people can take to stay safe from the dangers of carbon monoxide – the ‘Silent Killer’. The ambassadors explained what gas does in the home and how it gets there, before detailing what Wales & West Utilities do to make sure people continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply. They also spent time explaining the steps people should take if they were to smell gas or suspect CO poisoning, before encouraging youngsters to learn the national gas emergency number – 0800 111 999.

Wales & West Utilities Jack Carpenter, who is leading the gas upgrade project in Penygarn, said:

“We’re committed to supporting the communities where we work, not just through upgrading the gas network, but by investing in local initiatives that make a real difference to the community.

“Our ambassadors enjoyed delivering the safety sessions, and the pupils were engaged throughout. We’re pleased that we’ve also been able to support the school with its outdoor space improvements.”

Lee Jones, Deputy Headteacher at Penygarn Primary School, said:

“The event was delivered in a fun and informative way which will help pupils take this important information back to their families. We’re grateful for Wales & West Utilities additional support to improve our outdoor area, which will benefit pupils now, and well into the future.”

Wales & West Utilities is the gas emergency and pipeline service, delivering energy to over 7.5 million people across Wales and the south west of England. We don’t sell gas; we transport it through an extensive underground network of more than 35,000 kilometres of pipes.
