Wales & West Utilities is progressing with its work to upgrade the gas network in the Kings Road area of Plymouth.

The work, which started at the beginning of June, is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses and keep local people safe and warm for generations to come. As part of the next stage of work the gas emergency and pipeline service will be working in the Stonehouse Bridge Roundabout area.

To keep disruption to a minimum, Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Plymouth City Council to plan the work. So engineers and the local community are kept safe, the work will be carried out in phases and traffic management will be used throughout.

  • Phase 1 involves a lane closure heading eastbound on Stonehouse Bridge and four-way traffic lights on Stonehouse Bridge roundabout (6-12 September)
  • Phase 2 involves a lane closure heading eastbound on Stonehouse Bridge. This will involve two diversions (13-19 September)
    • a diversion heading northbound, via Stonehouse Bridge
    • a diversion heading westbound, via Durnford Street and Barrack Place
  • Phase 3 involves a full road closure eastbound on Stonehouse Bridge. A diversion will be in place via ’s Kings Road, Paradise Road and the Mill Bridge (20-26 September)

Wales & West Utilities James Adams is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:

While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Plymouth. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.

We will work as safely and as quickly as possible to finish the work, whilst keeping inconvenience to a minimum for local people and road users. Our engineers are following all hygiene and social distancing guidelines and we would respectfully ask that you keep a 2m distance if passing our work site.

To support communities through Coronavirus, we’re working hard to keep the gas flowing so local people are safe and warm.
