Wales & West Utilities project to upgrade the gas network in the Watchet area is progressing.

The work, which started in May, is vital to ensuring that gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area, helping to keep people warm for decades to come.

As part of the next phase of the work it has been agreed with Somerset Council that Brendon Road will be closed to traffic heading into Watchet between 5 October – 13 November. A clearly signposted diversion route will be in place and Wales & West Utilities has liaised with bus services, whilst Somerset Council will be running a shuttle bus service linking Watchet, Doniford and Williton.

The project is part of Wales & West Utilities work to invest over £1.2 million during the next year to upgrade gas pipes in the Watchet and Williton areas, helping ensure a safe and reliable supply for around 700 customers for decades to come.

The intensive programme of mains replacement works will see over six kilometres of gas pipes upgraded across the area and the gas emergency and pipeline service will continue to work closely with Somerset Council to carefully plan all projects and manage any necessary traffic measures.

Wales & West Utilities' Roxanne Whittaker is managing the work and said:

“This work involves investing in our gas network to ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for the future for the customers we serve.

"We'll be keeping the local community updated on these works and working with the local authority, and other key partners, to keep disruption to a minimum. We ask motorists to strictly follow the traffic management signage to keep the traffic flowing, and our colleagues safe as they complete this work.

“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient gas network that households and business can rely on every day. While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life – from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.”
