Work to upgrade the gas pipes in the Station Road area of Congresbury has been brought forward to accommodate additional works that are being led by North Somerset Council.
The works are vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come.
The work was due to take place at a later date but is being carried out earlier at the request of North Somerset Council, which is coordinating efforts with utilities ahead of its resurfacing project.
Wales & West Utilities will start the programme to upgrade nearly 900 metres of gas pipes on 19 October and aims to complete the works by early 2027. Work will involve upgrading gas pipes on Station Road, Bristol Road and Smallway.
It has been agreed with the Council that phased traffic management will be in place, which will include two and three way lights, and road closures. Clear signage will be in place and motorists are advised to allow sufficient travel time. All local businesses will be open, as usual, and trade deliveries will be accommodated, where possible.
Cllr Hugh Malyan, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, said:
“We welcome the collaborative approach being taken with Wales & West Utilities to deliver these essential gas network upgrades ahead of our planned highway improvement programme. By carrying out the gas works first, we can then undertake road resurfacing works to improve overall conditions and make the most of future investment in the area.
"We want to thank residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while these important works are undertaken. While we recognise the temporary disruption this may cause, completing these works now will help provide reliable and safe gas supply ahead of the colder winter months while enabling longer-term improvements to the highway network. Residents and commuters can view all of the current and upcoming works in North Somerset on One Network to help them plan their journeys."
Wales & West Utilities Simon Lee is managing this project and said:
“We are partnering with the Council to complete these essential works ahead of their programme.
“This work involves investing in our gas network to ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for the future for the customers we serve.
"We'll be keeping the local community updated on these works and working with the local authority, and other key partners, to keep disruption to a minimum. We ask motorists to strictly follow the traffic management signage to keep the traffic flowing, and our colleagues safe as they complete this work.
“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient gas network that households and business can rely on every day. While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life – from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.”
