Wales & West Utilities is investing more than £15 million over the next year to modernise the gas network across Bristol, helping to ensure a safe and reliable supply for customers and strengthening the city’s energy foundations for decades to come.

The extensive programme of mains replacement works will see nearly 34 kilometres of ageing gas mains replaced with modern, durable pipes designed to keep the gas flowing safely to homes and businesses today, while supporting Bristol’s energy needs of the future. The investment in the gas network is critical to ensure the people of Bristol can continue to depend on a resilient energy source that is safe, effective and out of sight. The project will also prepare the infrastructure for the future allowing for flexibility in responding to changing energy demands and new technologies as the UK moves to a net-zero energy system.

The gas emergency and pipeline service will work closely with Bristol City Council to carefully plan projects, and manage any necessary traffic measures to minimise disruption to local communities.

Projects are planned in the following areas: Portishead East, Henbury, Stoke Bishop, Brislington, Redfield, Speedwell and the wider Eastville area.

Wales & West Utilities’ Simon Lee is managing the programme and said:

“We’re investing in our gas network to ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for the future for the customers we serve across the area. We’ll continue to work closely with the local authority, and commit to keep communities informed as projects are planned and delivered.

“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient network that people rely on every day and to strengthen the network for the future of energy.

“While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life – from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.

“This investment will not only maintain today’s supply but also prepare the network to transport greener gases in the future.”
