Wookey Hole community invited to hear about gas upgrade project

Posted: 11/11/2025

Essential work to upgrade the gas network in the High Street area of Wookey Hole is set to start in the New Year, and Wales & West Utilities is inviting the local community to find out more about the plans.

Members of the local community are invited to the drop-in session, which will take place on 20 November between 9am - 5pm at Wookey Hole Caves, Wookey Hole, Wells, BA5 1BA. Here they can view plans and direct any questions to the project team.

Gas emergency and pipeline service, Wales & West Utilities, will start the work on 5 January 2026, and the project is planned to be completed by the middle of March. The project is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come.

Wales & West Utilities has liaised with Somerset Council to plan the work, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place for the duration of the project. This will include a road closure on London Street and London Road. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses, including deliveries.

Wales & West Utilities' Simon Lee is managing the work and said:

"We’re inviting members of the local community to join us at our drop-in event to learn more about the upcoming work and what it means for the local area.

“We appreciate that there can be localised disruption when we carry out our improvement works, but this upgrade is essential to ensure that homes and businesses in the area can continue to benefit from a safe and reliable gas supply. The existing pipes have served the Wookey Hole community well for many years, and this investment will help ensure the network remains fit for purpose, both now and for the future.

“Although most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a vital role in everyday life, from heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath.  This work will not only secure today’s supply but also prepare the network to carry greener gases, supporting the UK’s transition to a net zero energy future.”
