Williton gas upgrade project starts

Wales & West Utilities has recently started a project to upgrade the gas pipes in the Long Street area of Williton.
The £537,000 project is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come. Providing everything goes to plan, this phase of work will be complete by Spring 2026, and a further section on the A39 Long Street will take place in Autumn/Winter 2026.
Wales & West Utilities continues to work closely with Somerset Council, and traffic management will be in place throughout the project. This initially includes:
- A road closure on North Road from where it meets Five Bells to Danesfield Church of England School (8 October – 8 December)
- A road closure on Doniford Road (8 December – 13 February)
Further traffic management will be in place as the project progresses, and Wales & West Utilities is planning a drop-in session for local people to meet the project team and ask any questions. Information will be communicated in due course.
Wales & West Utilities' Roxanne Whittaker is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
