Gas emergency and pipeline service Wales & West Utilities has officially opened its latest state-of-the-art depot in Cullompton.
The investment in the new depot, on Stoneyford Business Park, will support the company’s operations in the area and add to the network of facilities serving the south west of England. Rooted in the Cullompton community, the facility will house approximately 200 colleagues who work 24/7 to upgrade gas pipes across the region, whilst also responding to over 25,000 gas emergency calls each year.
The site is the latest in a series of upgrades to Wales & West Utilities facilities and was officially opened by Councillor Tony Spring, Town Mayor and Chair of Cullompton Town Council.
The depot is part of the company’s property strategy and will become an important base for the Wales & West Utilities team, who work to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses across the region.
Speaking at the opening, Wales & West Utilities Chief Operating Officer, Rob Long, said:
The opening of the Cullompton depot signifies a pivotal time for us as a business. As we move into our next investment period, this depot will be a solid base from which our engineers and office staff will work.
From this site, we will complete an average of 40km of gas mains replacement whilst also renewing around 4000 services annually. We’ll also complete around 4,500 repairs and upgrade more than 3,000 metres of gas pipes to guarantee the future security and integrity of our network.
In opening the depot, Wales & West Utilities has successfully relocated colleagues from an older depot in Exeter.
Sustainability is at the heart of the depot, which has solar panels, recycling facilities, charging points for electric and hybrid vehicles, and plans for biodiversity enhancements.
Rob continued:
I am pleased to see our state-of-the-art operating base open, which will enhance our ability to serve the millions of individuals and businesses across the region.
In bringing this facility to completion, we have taken great care to ensure it meets the highest standards in security, safety, environmental sustainability, and the quality of the working environment. This depot is well-equipped to support our teams and the local community for many years to come as we maintain our operations and build our network to supply green energy.
Councillor Tony Spring, Town Mayor and Chair of Cullompton Town Council, said:
It was an honour to open the Wales & West Utilities depot at Cullompton and to hear about the programme of critical infrastructure work the site will enable.
Connecting businesses to the community and supporting employment opportunities in the area is critically important as Cullompton grows and develops. I am delighted that Wales & West Utilities has chosen Cullompton for its new site and, on behalf of the Town Council, I extend my warmest welcome and wish the business every success.
