Wales & West Utilities reminds Crewkerne community of essential work starting next week

Posted: 09/01/2026

Wales & West Utilities is reminding the local Crewkerne community that work to resurface part of South Street will begin next week.

The work starts on Monday (12 January) and has been planned with Somerset Council. It follows a project undertaken in 2024 to upgrade the gas network in the area.

The resurfacing works will take place between 12 – 17 January, and during this time South Street will be closed between the junctions of Cropmead and Kithill. Two diversion routes will be clearly signposted, one for cars and the other for HGV’s, and HGV’s must follow the specified route.

Wales & West Utilities James Godfrey is managing this project and said:

“This work needs to be undertaken as soon as possible, and we have worked with the Council Highways to plan the works accordingly.

“It follows our project in 2024, which was essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’d like to thank the local community and road users, in advance, for their patience as we work as quickly and safely as possible to finish the resurfacing project.”

Wales & West Utilities is the gas emergency and pipeline service, delivering energy to over 7.5 million people across Wales and the south west of England. We don’t sell gas; we transport it through an extensive underground network of more than 35,000 kilometres of pipes.

If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999 immediately. Trained engineers are available 24/7 to respond and keep you safe.
