Wales & West Utilities is shortly starting work to upgrade part of the gas network in the Barrington Street area of Tiverton.

The works, which start on 28 July, are essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations. Barring any engineering difficulties, the project will finish by the end of October.

As part of the works, the gas emergency and pipeline service has liaised with both Devon County Council and Tiverton Town Council. The following traffic management has been agreed:

  • A road closure on Barrington Street from the junction with Water Lane to the junction with Gold Street (28 July – 20 October)
  • The existing one-way system on Barrington Street and William Street will be suspended to allow residents and businesses access from either Gold Street or William Street, depending on the stage of works

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this work and said:

We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Tiverton. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
