Third party damage caused to gas main near Kingsbridge
7 January 2026, 17:00
Throughout the day, we have continued to visit the remaining properties to restore their gas supplies after a third party damaged our gas main near Kingsbridge. 83% of the 4,600 properties affected have now had their gas supply restored.
The remaining properties are largely those where we have not been able to get an answer when we have called. Details have been left at these properties on how to arrange for an engineer to restore the supply as soon as contact is made with us. If anyone does need to arrange an engineer to call, then they can do so by calling us on 0800 912 2999.
People will be pleased to learn that we are now starting to demobilise from the area and return our engineers and incident support team to their homes.
However, we will be retaining a presence in the area over the coming days and have also put plans in place to ensure we are able to respond to requests to restore supplies as and when people return to their holiday or second homes.
We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone living in and around Kingsbridge, Malborough and Salcombe for their patience, cooperation and the sincere kindness they have shown to all of our colleagues as we have worked to restore supplies.
If anyone does smell gas then they are reminded to call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.

Our teams continue to work tirelessly restoring supplies to the 4,600 customers impacted by the third party damage caused to our gas main near Kingsbridge.
With over 100 engineers working to restore supplies as quickly as possible, we have now successfully restored supplies to around 75% of properties.
We still have some properties in Salcombe and Kingsbridge to visit, which we are already doing from first thing this morning, to restore supplies; however, the majority of the remaining properties are those where we have already visited but not been able to gain access. Details have been left on how to arrange for an engineer to call to restore the supply as soon as contact is made with us.
We continue to appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to restore the remaining supplies and value people’s continued support in enabling us to gain access to their properties.

Since first thing this morning, our teams have been working tirelessly to restore supplies to customers impacted by the third party damage caused to our gas main near Kingsbridge.
We continue to have over 100 engineers – many drafted in from elsewhere across our network – working to restore supplies as quickly as possible to the 4,600 properties affected.
Throughout the day we have had teams working in Kingsbridge restoring the remaining properties there and teams also in Salcombe restoring supplies throughout the town. We have been greatly assisted by the fact that a lot of people have been at their properties to grant us access which really has enabled us to make good progress. Our teams will continue working late into this evening visiting as many more properties as they can.
We continue to appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to restore supplies and value people’s continued support in enabling us to gain access to their properties.

Our teams worked late into the night last night continuing with our work to restore gas supplies to customers impacted by the damage caused to our gas main.
Our teams have been out since first thing in Kingsbridge working through restoring supplies to the remaining customers there that we need to visit.
In Salcombe, our commissioning of the gas main last night was successful and our teams are now already in the area beginning the process of restoring supplies. If people can make every effort to be at their property during today this will greatly help to speed up the process of getting properties back on gas.
We continue to appreciate the support and cooperation our teams are being shown by the communities here as we work to resolve the situation.

Since early this morning, our teams have been working tirelessly to restore supplies to customers impacted by the third-party damage caused to our gas main near Kingsbridge.
We have over 100 engineers – many drafted in from elsewhere across our network – working across the areas to restore supplies as quickly as possible.
This afternoon, we completed the restoration of supplies in Malborough. The only properties remaining are those where there has been nobody at the property when we have called. We have tried these properties on a number of occasions and have left a card with information on how to contact us. We will arrange for an engineer to call to restore the supply to those individual properties as soon as contact is made with us.
We have also made good progress in Kingsbridge today. Our engineers have been working their way around the properties there, and they will continue to work late into this evening restoring supplies, before continuing again first thing tomorrow morning.
In Salcombe, thanks to the positive response we have had today to our plea to access the empty properties there, we are now in a position to be able to begin commissioning the gas network. Firstly, we will need to monitor ‘no access’ properties to ensure that there are no gas escape traces within these properties. Once we are satisfied that there are no escapes, we will then be able to commence the process of restoring supplies.
We continue to appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to restore supplies and value people’s continued support in enabling us to gain access to their properties.

Malborough and Kingsbridge
Our teams worked late into the night yesterday continuing to restore gas supplies to customers in Malborough. This work has continued since early this morning as they work their way around the remaining properties.
This morning, we have also started the process of restoring gas supplies to properties in Kingsbridge, so our teams will be visiting properties there to put the gas back on safely for customers. However, we still have a high number of properties in the area that we have not been able to access to isolate supplies.
This means that after we have commissioned the local network and before we can transfer all our resources to the restoration of supplies in the area, we will need to monitor ‘no access’ properties to ensure that there are no gas escape traces within these properties. This is not ideal but is essential.
As soon as these checks have been completed, we will move all our resources onto restoring supplies in the area.
We remind customers that we will need to gain access to your properties to restore the supply.
We again request that all property owners, landlords, letting agencies or designated key holders who are responsible for properties that we have not been able access contact us urgently so we can isolate your supplies to enable us to transfer our resources to the supply restoration process. This can be done by approaching one of the many engineers we have working in the area directly or by calling us on 0800 912 2999.
If anyone does smell gas in the area, then please contact the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
Salcombe
We still have a high number of properties in Salcombe where we have not been able to gain access. This means we have engineers still working to gain access to them in order to switch the gas valve off.
We would ask that any landlords, letting agents or designated key holders for properties in Salcombe and are aware the property is empty get in contact with us immediately to discuss ways for us to gain access. This can be done by approaching one of the many engineers we have working in the area directly or by calling us on 0800 912 2999.
If anyone does smell gas in the area, then please contact the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.

Since early this morning, our teams have been working tirelessly to visit the 4,600 properties which have been affected by the third party damage caused to our gas main near Kingsbridge.
We have over 100 engineers – many drafted in from elsewhere across our network - working across the areas and we have already visited 90% of properties.
As a result of isolating the majority of properties in Malborough, we have been able to commence restoring gas supplies there this afternoon. Our teams will continue working late into the evening visiting as many properties as they can and will continue from first thing tomorrow morning.
While our teams have also made good progress accessing properties in Kingsbridge and Salcombe, we still have a number of properties where we have not been able to gain access. Our teams will continue trying into this evening and from first thing and we really do urge people to ensure someone is at the property so that we can have access to isolate the supply. The quicker we can isolate the majority of supplies in these area, the quicker we can commence restoring supplies.
We continue to appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to restore supplies and would value people’s support in enabling us to gain access to properties.

Since being made aware of the damage caused to our pipe, our engineers have been on site planning the necessary repair and are now beginning the process of undertaking the work.
This is a very challenging repair and it is too early at this stage to say how long it will take to fully restore supplies, however customers should be prepared for an interrupted gas supply for a few days.
