St Austell gas upgrade to begin

Posted: 29/09/2025

Wales & West Utilities is shortly starting a project to upgrade gas pipes in the Polmear Road area of St Austell.

The £243,000 investment project starts on 8 October and is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area—helping to keep people warm for many years to come. The project is expected to be completed before Christmas, assuming no major engineering difficulties.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Cornwall Council to plan the work, and it has been agreed that it will be completed in phases. The following traffic management will be in place:

  • Three-way traffic lights on Cromwell Road, at its junctions with Porthpean Road and Polmear Road (8 October – 14 November)
  • Four-way traffic lights on Polmear Road, at its junctions with Charlestown Road, Mount Charles Road, and Holmbush (12 November – 23 December)

Wales & West Utilities' Natalie Raphael is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Cornwall. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
