Essential work to upgrade gas pipes in the High Street area of Portishead has been extended until 1 August.
Wales & West Utilities has been working in the town since May, and engineering difficulties have led to North Somerset Council extending the permit to work in the area by two weeks.
The work is necessary to repair several recent leaks on the gas network. There is no risk to the public, but it’s important that the works are carried out now to stop further leaks whilst ensuring gas supplies are fit now, and for the future. The upgrade is essential to reduce further leaks and disruption, and to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
For the remainder of the project, High Street will be closed to road users between the junctions of Victoria Close and Stoke Road. Traffic management and appropriate signage will be in place to keep everyone safe and those using the highway network fully informed.
Wales & West Utilities Simon Lee is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:
“We have found two additional gas mains which run under buildings and now need to abandon these, and lay a new main which will provide gas to the area.
“We’d like to thank the local community for its patience whilst our engineers work to carry out the important project.
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Portishead. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
