Hungerford community invited to hear about gas upgrade project
Posted: 24/11/2025

Essential work to upgrade the gas network in the High Street area of Hungerford is set to start in the New Year, and Wales & West Utilities is inviting the local community to find out more about the plans.

Members of the local community are invited to drop in and visit the Wales & West Utilities stall (Church Street end, near the Town Hall) at the market on Wednesday 3 December. Here they can view plans and direct any questions to the project team, who will be on hand between 8am – 5pm.

Gas emergency and pipeline service, Wales & West Utilities, will start the work on 5 January 2026, with the work in High Street likely to be ongoing until the end of January, whilst the overall project is planned to be completed by the middle of February. The project is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come.

Wales & West Utilities has liaised with West Berkshire Council to plan the work, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place. This will include multi-way traffic lights, whilst the market is likely to be cancelled for the week of 7 January. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses, including deliveries.

Wales & West Utilities Mick Gallavin is managing the work and said:

“We’re continuing to work with the local community in planning this work and would like to see people join us at our stall at the market to learn more about the upcoming work and what it means for the local area.

“We appreciate that there can be localised disruption when we carry out our improvement works, but this upgrade is essential to ensure that homes and businesses in the area can continue to benefit from a safe and reliable gas supply. The existing pipes have served the community well for many years, and this investment will help ensure the network remains fit for purpose, both now and for the future.

“Although most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a vital role in everyday life, from heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath.  This work will not only secure today’s supply but also prepare the network to carry greener gases, supporting the UK’s transition to a net-zero energy future.”
