Wales & West Utilities is nearing the end of its project to upgrade over 3,000 metres of gas pipes in the South Molton area.
Wales & West Utilities will begin the final phase of work in the North Street area of the town on 23 June and, barring any engineering difficulties, the project will finish by the end of July. The work is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.
To plan the work the gas emergency and pipeline service has liaised with Devon County Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place throughout. As part of this final phase of works it has been agreed that:
- Two-way traffic lights on Widgery Drive (23 June – 04 July)
- Two-way traffic lights on Barnstaple Street, along with a footpath closure from Thornes Terrace to Barnstaple Street (30 June – 15 July)
- A road closure on West Street (15 – 28 July)
Wales & West Utilities is continuing to liaise with local businesses to inform them of the plans.
Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:
We are making good progress to complete this extensive gas upgrade project in a timely fashion.
We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.
While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across South Molton. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.
