Essential gas upgrade work to start in Hayle

Posted: 02/09/2025

Wales & West Utilities is shortly starting work to upgrade part of the gas network in Hayle.

The works in the Fore Street area of the town start on 15 September. They are essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations. Barring any engineering difficulties, the project will finish by Christmas.

As part of the works, the gas emergency and pipeline service has liaised with Cornwall Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place throughout. This currently includes:

  • Two-way traffic lights on Commercial Road (15 – 26 September)
  • Two-way traffic lights on Fore Street (15 September – 24 October). During this time, the bus stop will be suspended, and the pedestrian crossing will not be in use
  • A road closure on Lower Church Street (29 September – 10 October)
  • A road closure on Chapel Lane (13 – 24 October)
  • Rolling traffic lights along Market Square onto Copper Terrace (27 October – 19 December). During this time, bus stops will be suspended as works progress
  • A road closure on Pond Walk (8 – 19 December)

Wales & West Utilities Natalie Raphael is managing this work and said:

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the wider Hayle area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.”

We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.”
