Wales & West Utilities will be starting a £120,000 project to upgrade gas pipes in the Devizes Road area of Swindon.

The gas emergency and pipeline service is starting the work on 30 June and, barring any engineering difficulties, it will finish by the end of September. The works are essential to keep the gas flowing safely to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations.

The gas emergency and pipeline service has worked with Swindon Borough Council to plan the work, which will start from the Croft Road end and progress towards Wood Street. It has been agreed that traffic management will be in place throughout, which includes:

  • A phased closure on Devizes Road. This will start at the Croft Road end and will finish at the Wood Street junction.

Signage and diversion routes will be marked, and residents and local businesses will continue to have access. Delivery services and essential business operations will be maintained, with stewards on-site to manage access, where required.

Representatives of Wales & West Utilities will be visiting local businesses in the area over the coming weeks to provide further information about the project and to answer any questions.

Wales & West Utilities Mick Gallavin is managing this work and said:

We have been working with the Council to plan these essential works, and will be liaising with local traders to inform them of the plans and to answer any questions so that we can minimise disruption.

We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We understand that temporary pavement licences will be in place to support traders throughout the project and we look forward to working alongside the vibrant trading community during the summer months.

We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the Swindon area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
