Work to upgrade over 4,700 metres of gas pipes in the Kingston St. Mary area of Taunton is progressing well.

Gas emergency and pipeline service, Wales & West Utilities, started the project in March, which is essential to keep the gas flowing safely and reliably to local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations to come.

Wales & West Utilities has liaised with Somerset Council to plan the work and, as part of the next phase of work, the following traffic management will be in place:

A phased closure of Kingston Road (28 April – 23 September). The closure will be split into the following phases and road closures in the various phases will not take place at the same time.

The phases of work have been carefully planned but may be subject to minor changes, should the work proceed at a quicker pace than expected or should there be unforeseen complications that require more time and attention:

  • Phase 1 – A closure on Kingston Road, between Dodhill Road and Hope Corner Lane (28 April – 25 May)
  • Phase 2 – A closure on both Kingston Road (North into Kingston St. Mary) and Hope Corner Lane Road, whilst two-way traffic lights will be in place on Corkscrew Lane and Kingston Road (heading South into Taunton) (26 May – 12 June)
  • Phase 3 - A closure on Kingston Road, between the junctions of Meadow Close and Winpenny Lane (13 June – 6 July)
  • Phase 4 – A closure on Kingston Road between Winpenny Lane and Parsonage Lane (7 July – 10 August)
  • Phase 5 – Closures on Kingston Road, Parsonage Lane and Cheddon Fitzpaine Road (11 - 24 August)
  • A closure on Kingston Road from Cheddon Fitzpaine Road to Dodhill Road (24 August – 23 September)
  • After this works will continue into Church Lane, Yarford Road, Greenway and the west end of Parsonage Lane. The exact dates have not been confirmed but the entire project is expected to finish 21 November.

Wales & West Utilities Roxanne Whittaker is managing the work and said:

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the area. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.”
