Sarah Burgess from Pontyclun is one of our Gas Emergency Service Managers. She leads 30 engineers who respond to gas emergencies right across the West Wales area.

Sarah started her career as an apprentice in 1990, and has since held a number of positions including as a Gas Emergency Engineer before becoming a manager in 2017.

Sarah explains how her career has benefitted from being part of a company like Wales & West Utilities:

I applied for an apprenticeship on the advice of a careers advisor in school and now I can’t imagine doing anything but working in the gas industry! I have benefited from the opportunities Wales & West Utilities offer. Whether it is technical or non-technical training, there are so many different possibilities at Wales & West Utilities.

Since starting my career I’ve always wanted to progress and now as a manager I can increase my skills and knowledge further through the management training that is available. All of these opportunities presented to me have been invaluable in building my career.

Sarah is a well-respected, go-to gas engineer across the business and a role model for young women wanting a career in engineering.

I really enjoy my job and it’s fantastic that now, through telling my own story, I am able to motivate young women to further their careers. A career in engineering is certainly not just for boys and it presents vast opportunities to everyone. With the right mind-set and the fantastic support Wales & West Utilities can offer, you can go far.
