Carbon monoxide – The Silent Killer

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer because, you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it. That’s why it’s so sneaky!

Where does carbon monoxide hide?

The Silent Killer appears when things like gas, coal, or wood don’t burn properly. It might sneak out if:

  • An appliance isn’t fitted correctly
  • It hasn’t had regular safety checks
  • A chimney or vent is blocked

Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?

  • Breathing it in can make you feel dizzy, sick, or sleepy. It can even be deadly
  • Even small amounts over time can cause serious health problems.

What to do if you think the silent killer is nearby:

  • Call the National Gas Emergency Service: 0800 111 999
  • If someone is very unwell, call 999 straight away

How do you know if you have breathed in carbon monoxide?

What are the warning signs?

The Silent Killer doesn’t make a sound, but it can give you these symptoms::

  • Headache (this is the most common clue!)
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick or being sick
  • Feeling very tired or confused
  • Stomach pain
  • Trouble breathing

Watch out! These signs can look like food poisoning or the flu...But here’s a secret clue: The Silent Killer doesn’t cause a high temperature!

How to stay safe from the Silent Killer

The Silent Killer might be nearby if you spot:

  • A gas flame that’s floppy and yellow/orange (it should be strong and blue!)
  • Extra condensation on windows
  • Boiler pilot lights that keep going out
  • Soot or yellow stains around appliances

How to protect your home from carbon monoxide:

  • Gas appliances need to be checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Chimneys and flues need to be swept every year too, if
    in use.
  • Install certified carbon monoxide alarms, test them
    regularly too!

The Silent Killer likes to travel…

Going on a trip? Don’t let the Silent Killer tag along!

Whether you’re staying in:

  • A holiday home
  • A boat
  • A caravan
  • A campsite/tent

You still need to be careful as it’s not just gas that can cause carbon monoxide. Any fuel that burns including oil, wood and coal can cause carbon monoxide if it’s not used safely.

Top tip: Pack your carbon monoxide alarm and take it with you!

If you spot any signs of the Silent Killer, report it straight away:

  • In the UK: Call the National Gas Emergency Number – 0800 111 999
  • Abroad: Call the local emergency service.
