Work to upgrade the gas pipes in the Brendon Road area of Watchet has finished two weeks ahead of schedule – and the road has reopened.
Brendon Road was closed to traffic heading into Watchet since the beginning of the month whilst engineers carried out the programme, which was vital to ensure that gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area, helping to keep people warm for decades to come.
The project is part of Wales & West Utilities work to invest over £1.2 million during the next year to upgrade gas pipes in the Watchet and Williton areas, helping ensure a safe and reliable supply for around 700 customers for decades to come.
The overall programme of mains replacement works will see over six kilometres of gas pipes upgraded across the area and the gas emergency and pipeline service will continue to work closely with Somerset Council to carefully plan all work, and manage any necessary traffic measures.
Wales & West Utilities' Roxanne Whittaker is managing the work and said:
“We are happy to have finished this section of work two weeks early and would like to thank the local community for bearing with us.
“This work was essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
"As we continue our programme we'll be keeping the local community updated on these works and working with the local authority, and other key partners, to keep disruption to a minimum.
“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient gas network that households and business can rely on every day. While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life – from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.”
