Wales & West Utilities has begun work to upgrade the gas pipes in the Shaw area of Melksham.

The work is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come. It started last week and will be ongoing until early next year.

The work has been planned in conjunction with Wiltshire County Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place for the duration of the project. This initially includes:

  • Three-way traffic lights on the junction of Corsham Road and Top Lane (until 28 August)
  • A road closure on Middle Lane (12 – 30 October), this will involve two phases where the road will be closed between Top Lane and Brookfield Drive (12-18 October) and between Brookfield Drive and Corsham Road (19 – 25 October), whilst work to reinstate the road will be ongoing until 30 October
  • Three-way traffic lights on Shaw Hill (2 – 27 November)
  • Three-way traffic lights on Bath Road (16 November – 18 December)
  • A road closure in Shrunhold (4 January – 5 February ’27)
  • Motorists will also be asked to give and take on roads as the works progress

The project is part of Wales & West Utilities wider work to invest over £1.2 million over the next 18 months to upgrade gas pipes across Melksham. The intensive programme of wider mains replacement works will see nearly five kilometres of gas pipes upgraded across the area which will benefit local customers.

Wales & West Utilities Mick Gallavin is managing this work and said:

“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient gas network that households and business can rely on every day. In upgrading the gas network, the work will meet today’s energy needs, whilst also ensuring it is ready to transport greener gases in the future.

“While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life – from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.”
