Wales & West Utilities is working on various projects to upgrade the gas pipes across the Plymouth area.
The projects are vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come.
The work is ongoing in the Medway Road area of Combe Pafford, the Long Rydon area of Stoke Gabriel and the Baring Street area of Plymouth Drake. The projects have been planned in conjunction with Devon County Council and Plymouth City Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place. This includes:
Medway Road, Combe Pafford (work ongoing until 8 June)
- Motorists asked to give and take on Wembury Drive, Fore Street and Grasmere Close, where required
- Three-way traffic lights on Teignmouth Road (11 May – 8 June)

The projects are part of Wales & West Utilities work to invest over £500,000 in both Stoke Gabriel and Combe Pafford, and £1.6m in Plymouth Drake, over the next two years to upgrade gas pipes. The intensive programme of wider mains replacement works will see over 10,000 metres of gas pipes upgraded across the area.
Wales & West Utilities Natalie Raphael is managing this work and said:
“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
