Smoother journeys ahead as foot and cycle path get major upgrade in Worle
Posted: 07/10/2026

Wales & West Utilities has delivered an upgraded foot and cycle path for locals, working in partnership with North Somerset Council.

Local residents are benefiting from an upgraded foot and cycle path between Wigmore Gardens and Church Road in Worle. The upgrade was delivered as part of recent utility works, providing a new, high-quality surface along the full length of the route. The existing path had been damaged over time by tree root growth, creating maintenance challenges and concerns for residents.

Working together, the councils Highway Network Management team and Wales & West Utilities decided to take action and deliver a more durable solution through a full-width asphalt reconstruction – resulting in a smoother, more accessible route for pedestrians, cyclists and people with mobility needs.

Importantly, the improvement was delivered at no additional cost to the council and is expected to avoid around £15,000 in future resurfacing costs.

Programme Controller, Simon Lee, from Wales & West Utilities, said:

“We’re delighted that our partnership work with the Council has allowed us to leave a legacy for the community in more than one way.

“Whilst the gas network is underfoot and out of sight, our upgrade work is essential to keep safe and reliable energy flowing to locals. Whereas the resurfacing work will leave a visible and pragmatic benefit for the community for decades to come.

“This positive outcome highlights how collaborative working can help maximise opportunities to improve local infrastructure while delivering lasting benefits for the people we serve.”

Cllr Hugh Malyan, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, said:

“This is a fantastic example of partnership working to deliver real benefits for our residents. By working closely with Wales & West Utilities, our team have been able to secure a long-term improvement to the benefit of everyone who uses the path.

“The project not only responded to concerns raised by local people but also represents excellent value for money by reducing the need for future maintenance.”
