Gas upgrade work starts in North Road East area of Plymouth
Posted: 22/06/2026

Wales & West Utilities has started work to upgrade the gas pipes in the North Road East area of Plymouth.

The work is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come. It recently started, and will be ongoing until the end of August.

The work has been planned in conjunction with Plymouth City Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place during the project.

This includes:

Until 28 August

  • Parking suspension on North Road East and a one-way directional closure, between the junctions with Plymouth Station and Evelyn Place

19 June – 10 July

Road closures on:

  • Winston Avenue, from the junction with North Road East
  • James Street, between the junctions of North Road East and to the rear of 81 North Road East
  • Wellbeck Avenue, with a parking suspension between the junctions of North Road East and Derry Avenue Lane

10 July – 31 July

  • Road closure and parking suspension to both sides of the carriageway on Derry Avenue, between the junctions of North Road East and Glen Park Avenue
  • Give and take system and parking suspension to both sides of carriageway on Glen Park Avenue, from the junction with Restormel Road to No. 28 Glen Park Avenue

31 July – 28 August (all road closures and parking suspensions)

  • Sutherland Road, from junction of Sutherland Place to Houndiscombe Lane
  • Houndiscombe Road, from junction of St Lawrence Road to North Road East

  • Endsleigh Place, from junction of North Road East to Sherwell Lane

The project is part of Wales & West Utilities work to invest over £1.6m over the next two years to upgrade gas pipes in Plymouth Drake. The intensive programme of wider mains replacement works will see over three kilometres of gas pipes upgraded across the area as the company upgrades the critical energy infrastructure in the area to benefit local customers.

Wales & West Utilities Natalie Raphael is managing this work and said:

“We’re investing in our gas network to ensure it remains safe, reliable and fit for the future for the customers we serve. We'll be keeping the local community updated on these works and working with the local authority, and other key partners, to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We understand our work can cause disruption, but it is essential to maintain a resilient gas network that households and business can rely on every day.

“While much of the gas network is out of sight, it plays a vital role in daily life – from heating homes to cooking meals and we know how important it is that gas is there when people need it.

“Once we’ve completed this intensive phase of work, we’ll leave behind an upgraded network that meets today’s energy needs, and is ready to transport greener gases in the future. By completing this work now, barring any emergency repairs, we can avoid returning to the area and causing further disruption to the local community for decades.”
