Cathedral Road, Cardiff gas pipe upgrade

Posted: 23/01/2026

Wales & West Utilities is progressing well with work to upgrade the gas pipes in the Cathedral Road area of Cardiff.

The project, which started on the 13 January, is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come. All going to plan, the project will be complete on 13 March.

The first phase of work has now finished, which included upgrading the pipes on the junction of Plasturton Place and Cathedral Road, and work will begin on phase two of the project next Monday (26 January).

For the remainder of the project, it has been agreed with Cardiff Council that the following traffic management will be in place:

  •     Three-way traffic lights on the junction of Cathedral Road, Sophia Close and Talbot Street (26 January – 1 February)
  •       A lane closure near the junction of Cathedral Road and Hamilton Street, whilst the junction of Hamilton Street will also be closed). Traffic will be able to use the bus lane during this time (2 – 13 February)
  •        A closure on the junction of Cathedral Road and Sneyd Street (23 February – 1 March)
  •       A closure on the junction of Cathedral Road and Pontcanna Street (2 – 8 March).
  •       A closure on the junction of Cathedral Road and William Street (9 – 13 March).

All traffic management will be removed for the Six Nations home games (15 / 23 February) and all going to plan, the project will be complete on the 13 March, and all traffic management removed in plenty of time for the Six Nations game on the 14 March.

Wales & West Utilities' Andrew Coleman is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:

“We have made good progress on the project so far and are on track to finish by the middle of March.

“We are working closely with Cardiff Council, and it has been agreed that we will remove all traffic management during the busy Six Nations home games during February.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
