Urgent gas works start in Newquay
Wales & West Utilities is carrying out urgent work to upgrade the gas pipes in the Edgecumbe Gardens area of Newquay.
The work has been prioritised after monitoring has found a number of leaks on the network. There is no risk to public safety, and this work is essential to ensure they keep the gas safely flowing to heat homes and power businesses, keeping you and your family safe and warm for generations to come.
Work began today (23 February), and, it is anticipated that it will be ongoing until early spring.
Wales & West Utilities will be hand-delivering letters to affected residents, and will continue to liaise with Cornwall Council to coordinate the work. It has been agreed that traffic management will be in place throughout so that engineers can complete the work safely. From today, the following roads will be closed, whilst other traffic management is likely to be in place whilst work is ongoing:
- Narrowcliff, from outside Marina Hotel to the junction with Hilgrove Road
- Ulalia Road, from the junction with Narrowcliff to the rear of No 1 Ulalia Road
- Colvreath Road, from the junction of Ulalia Road to the rear of Hotel Bristol
Wales & West Utilities Natalie Raphael is managing this gas pipe upgrade work. She said:
“We will continue to update the local community as the works progress.
"We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
