Penzance gas upgrade project progresses

Posted: 18/09/2025

Wales & West Utilities is progressing well with its essential £250,000 project to upgrade gas pipes in Penzance.

The gas emergency and pipeline service started the project to upgrade gas pipes in the St. Clare Street area of the town in August, and is due to progress to the Station Road area later this month. The works are essential to keep the gas flowing reliably to heat and power local homes and businesses, keeping people warm for generations.

Wales & West Utilities has worked with Cornwall Council to plan the project, and it has been agreed that a road closure on the following roads will be in place between 22 September – 20 October:

  • Station Road, from the junction with Market Jew Street to the entrance of Station Road carpark
  • Market Jew Street, from the junction with Leskinnick Street to the junction with Adelaide Street
  • Leskinnick Street, from the junction with Market Jew Street to the junction with Leskinnick Terrace
  • East Terrace, from the junction with Leskinnick Street to the junction with Chyandour Cliff

During this period, four-way lights will be on Station Road, Albert Pier, Wharf Road, and Adelaide Street. A further phase of work will take place in the Market Place area of the town between 20 October – 1 December.

Wales & West Utilities Natalie Raphael is managing this work and said:

“We are making good progress with the project, and moving to the Station Road area signifies the second phase of the work.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Penzance. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be reliable and there when you need it.”
