Gas upgrade work gets underway in Church Lane area of Torquay

Posted: 02/03/2026

Wales & West Utilities has started a project to upgrade the gas pipes in the Church Lane area of Torquay.

The project is vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area - helping to keep people warm for decades to come. Providing everything goes to plan, the overall project will finish during May.

Wales & West Utilities continues to work closely with Torbay Council, and it has been agreed that traffic management will be in place, which includes:

  • A closure on Church Road between the junctions of Fore Street and Moor Lane (27 February – 18 May)
  • Give and take by motorists on St Augustine’s (27 February – 27 March)
  • A closure on Fore Street between the junctions of Isaacs Road to outside no. 116 Fore Street (23 March – 14 April)
  • Multi-way traffic lights on the junction of Moor Lane, Church Road, Jacks Lane and Swedwell Road (30 March – 7 April)
  • A closure on Moor Lane from outside no. 82 to the junction with Swedwell Road and Jacks Lane (7 – 24 April)
  • A closure on Swedwell Road between the junctions of Jacks Lane and Gard Close (7 – 24 April)
  • A closure on Jacks Lane between the junctions of Swedwell Road and Barton Hill Road (13 April – 5 June)

Wales & West Utilities' Natalie Raphael is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and said:

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
