Wales & West Utilities is reporting good progress in its £645,000 project to upgrade gas pipes in the Bleadon Hill area of Weston-super-Mare.

The scheme, which started in July, is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area so that people are safe and warm for generations to come.It involves upgrading gas pipes in the Bleadon Hill area and, barring any engineering difficulties, it is expected to be complete by November.

In planning the work Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with North Somerset Council to make sure disruption is kept to a minimum.  As part of the next section of work it has been agreed that to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe, road closures will be in place whilst work is ongoing.  These closures will be split into two phases and diversion routes will be clearly signposted:

  •          Phase One will start week commencing 2 September and take five weeks. Bleadon Hill will be closed from its junction with Leighton Crescent to its junction with Roman Road. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
  •          Phase Two will start week commencing 30 September and will take eight weeks. There will be a two-week closure on Roman Road from its junction with Celtic Way to Bleadon Hill Golf Course.  Celtic Way will be closed from its                     junction with Roman Road to its junction with Shiplate Road. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for the area, Barry Sale, is managing the work and said:

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Weston-super-Mare. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential. We’ll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

“This work will not only keep the gas flowing safely and reliably today, it will also help make sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy.”
