Wales & West Utilities has launched a new podcast. The first episode of The Utility Room talks about the company's vision for the future and what it means for customers.
In 2019, more than 80% of homes and businesses in the UK rely on the gas network for heat and power. Daily, gas also plays a key role in keeping the lights on. Connected to Wales & West Utilities gas network is a fleet of flexible power stations backing up renewable electricity. They come on when the wind doesn't blow or the sun doesn't shine.
But what does the future look like?
The UK has challenging carbon targets, and as a country we recently committed to 'Net Zero'. This means that the country will have to reduce carbon emissions significantly. Good progress has been made on decarbonising electricity. May 2019 saw the first coal free week since the 1880s! But heat has long been a bigger challenge...
At the heart of all Wales & West Utilities work on the future of energy is what energy customers want and need - reliable, affordable and green energy. If the country is to meet Net Zero, how will the customer of the future heat their home?
Do we turn off the gas network and electrify home heating? Perhaps we should convert the gas network to carry green gases like Hydrogen. And what on earth is a smart hybrid heating system?
