Volunteers from Wales & West Utilities have spent the morning in Porthcawl undertaking a litter pick across beach.
The nine workers from the gas emergency and pipeline service collected over nine bags of rubbish in just a two-hour period in a bid to make a positive difference to the local marine environment.
The event was part of Keep Wales Tidy’s Marine Clean Cymru campaign which takes place from the 20 September - 20 October and targets rivers, waterways and beaches across Wales.
Volunteers from Wales & West Utilities are supporting the campaign as part of the company’s commitment to give back to the communities in which it works.
Elaina Cook, Wales & West Utilities Priority Customer Service Manager, led the event and said:
“We always seek to make a positive impact to the communities in which we work and have worked closely with Keep Wales Tidy for many years to help improve the environment across Wales.
“We all know the impact litter and waste is having on our waterways and that it is a growing threat to our coastal environment. We’re delighted to support this initiative and play our part in tackling litter and help clean up our local beaches and waterways.
“We had a fantastic response in our call for volunteers and are delighted to have collected so much litter in a small amount of time. We hope those that live and visit the area will benefit from a cleaner town.”
Wales & West Utilities has been working in Porthcawl to complete a gas pipe upgrade scheme which is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses today and in the future.
Elaina continued:
“We know our gas pipe upgrade work can sometimes be disruptive and we wanted to do something to give back to further benefit the local area. We are happy to have lent a helping hand to the people of Porthcawl.”

By working in partnership on this clean-up campaign with other organisations, we are showing how we’re caring for Wales and the wider world together.”
Marine Clean Cymru coincides with the Marine Conservation Society’s annual Great British Beach Clean (20-23 September), the UK’s largest national beach cleaning and litter survey programme. Litter data collected and submitted will be used to identify the specific problems our Welsh seas and coasts are facing and enable collective action to be taken to improve our marine environment.
Wales & West Utilities has a team of more than 1000 trained and experienced engineers to help serve the 7.5m people across the south west of England and Wales that rely on its gas emergency and pipeline services. Our team is also working on a multi-million pound, 30-year gas pipe investment programme which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being upgraded to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply now and in the future.
