Rhiwbina residents invited to learn about local gas plans

Wales & West Utilities is continuing its gas pipe upgrade programme in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff and is inviting local people to an event to find out more about the work.

The £2.8 million investment work, the latest phase of which starts on 22 July, is essential to make sure the gas is kept flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area and so families are safe and warm for generations to come.

A public drop-in information event will take place on Wednesday 17 July between 1-7pm at Toby Carvery, 21 Tyn Y Parc Road, Cardiff, CF14 6BH. The event will give people the opportunity to learn more about the plans and colleagues from Wales & West Utilities will also be on hand to answer any questions.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Cardiff Council to carefully plan this work to minimise disruption and all businesses in the area will be open as usual throughout. The work has been split into two phases, which both require traffic management.

  • Phase one involves a northbound closure on Pantbach Road between Beulah Road and Ty Wern Road. It will start on 22 July on Pantbach Road and will finish by 1 September. This work has been planned to take place during the school holidays to keep disruption to a minimum.
  • Phase two involves an eastbound closure on Tyn-Y-Parc Road between Manor Way and Ty Wern Road. It will start on 19 August and will be complete by 29 September.

Diversion routes for both road closures will be clearly signposted. While the dates for both phases of work overlap, only one road will be closed at a time. The overlap is to allow us to continue working if we are ahead of schedule on phase one and this has been agreed with Cardiff Council.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller Adam Smith is managing the work and said:

“Most of the gas network is underground and out of sight but it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Rhiwbina and the surrounding areas. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“We’re looking forward to speaking to local people, letting them know what we have planned and how we’ll be working hard to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Our team is also working on a multi-million pound, 30-year gas pipe investment programme which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being replaced with new long-lasting pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years, to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply now and in the future.
