Wales & West Utilities is to carry out a three-week project to upgrade the gas pipes on a section of road in Wedmore.
The work, which is essential to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area so that people are safe and warm for generations to come, involves closing a section of Pilcorn Street and will mean a 27-mile diversion route is in place.
The investment scheme begins on 29 July and, barring engineering difficulties, is likely to be complete by 16 August 2019.
As part of the essential work, it has been agreed with Somerset County Council that during the scheme Pilcorn Street will be closed from the junction of St Medard to Lascot Hill. The diversion route, which will be clearly signposted, will be via the B3151, A371 and B3139.
Wales & West Utilities has liaised closely with local residents affected by the work and access to homes will be maintained.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for the area, Barry Sale, is managing the work and said:

“Most of the gas network is underground and out of sight but it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Wedmore and the surrounding areas. Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.
“This work will not only keep the gas flowing safely and reliably today, it will also help make sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy.”
