A workforce fit for the future

Posted on: 19/02/2020

Jemima May is one of our 2019 apprentice intake and is from Plympton in the south west of England. She joined us in August last year, part of our Network Services team who look after the control systems of the gas network.

She says that she is loving her new challenge and is finding work as a gas engineer interesting. “I think a big thing for me was earning while you’re learning, and to have the opportunity to build a career in such a fast-moving industry was also really exciting."

Apprentices like Jemima are part of the next generation of gas engineers. In the future, green gases like hydrogen and biomethane, alongside smart hybrid heating systems, will make home heating zero carbon by 2050. “It’s one big learning curve. I found it surprising to know just how much must happen to deliver gas safely to peoples’ homes, but it’s so interesting learning all about it. And not just for today: The gas network will play an important role in the future and I’m looking forward to playing my part."

Before joining Wales & West Utilities, Jemima was in college and worked in a café. Speaking of her experiences so far, Jemima continued, “For me, the best thing is being able to experience and learn new things constantly. You’re always meeting new people and I’ve been given such helpful advice along the way too. My friends ask me what it’s like being a woman in a male dominated industry but I really don’t think it’s any different. I don’t get treated any differently to a male apprentice – it’s a very fair industry. Everyone is on the same level and are committed to delivering for our customers. I’ve had nothing but a positive experience."

In our Business Plan for 2021-2026, we set out how we’re going to continue to make our workforce inclusive so it better reflects the communities we serve. This includes maintaining high-quality apprenticeships and evolving the skills of our people to meet the needs of our customers today and in the future. You can find out more here.
