Wales & West Utilities’ team of gas engineers have said goodbye to residents and road users along the A4059 Abercynon to Mountain Ash route, as the company has completed work on its gas pipe investment scheme and has paved the way for works to the cross-valley link bridge to begin.

The company, which has been working in the area since July this year, has been working tirelessly for 16 weeks on its investment programme which will keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses and make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

The scheme involved upgrading over 4km of old metal pipes to new plastic ones.

Now the work is complete, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Wales & West Utilities will not need to work in the area for the next 80 years.

Wales & West Utilities Area Business Manager, Gareth Robinson, managed the work and said:

“We are delighted that we’ve been able to finish this work in a timely fashion, so that Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council can begin its work to the cross-valley link bridge.

“We know our gas pipe upgrade work can be disruptive and we want to thank everyone who lives, works and travels through this area for bearing with us while we did this essential work.”

In preparation and throughout the scheme Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with the Council to ensure effective planning was in place.

Councillor for Mountain Ash West, Andrew Morgan, added:

“From the outset, Cllr Treeby and I have asked Council Officers to support Wales & West Utilities to ensure works were carried out with as little disruption locally as possible.

“I am sure residents and businesses in and around Mountain Ash will welcome the news that these essential works have now been completed ahead of schedule.”

Wales & West Utilities was recently re-accredited by the Institute of Customer Service (ICS) as achieving its ServiceMark with Distinction. The company has successfully demonstrated meeting the demanding national customer service standard, scoring considerably higher than the utility sector benchmark and more than sector leading companies like Amazon and John Lewis.

The company is also the first gas network to have been recognised for meeting requirements, in line with the exacting British Standard 18477, for its work to help the most vulnerable.

Wales & West Utilities, the gas emergency and pipeline service that serves Wales and the south west of England, puts customers at the heart of the business and is rated the top utility company in the UK for customer service. If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night.

The company also has a multi-million pound, 30-year gas pipe investment programme which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years, to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply now and in the future.
