As part of Wales & West Utilities essential work to upgrade the gas pipes between Bargoed and Brithdir, the company has made sure Brithdir residents won’t be left out in the cold this winter as it puts on a shuttle bus service to nearby towns.
In planning the £30,000 investment Wales & West Utilities worked with Caerphilly County Borough Council and it was agreed that a road closure along the A469 from the junction of Groesfaen Terrace, past the Cemetery, to the junction of Station Terrace would be the safest way to carry out of the work, which meant bus routes to Merthyr Tydfil and Tredegar were affected. Access to the A469 from the Mountain Road is also closed. Listening to local residents concerns, Wales & West Utilities has stepped in and will fund a bus route 6 days a week for approximately 12 hours a day for the duration of the road closure.
The gas pipe investment work in the area will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come.
Having started on 15 November, the work involves upgrading 700 metres of old metal pipes to new plastic ones in the Brithdir and Aberbargoed area. The company anticipates the work will be complete before the Christmas period.
Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for south Wales, Francis Kirk, is managing the work and said:
“We know that working on roads and in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
“We are pleased to have been able to step in and help the Brithdir community, especially at Christmas time when people are keen to travel to nearby towns. We’ll be working hard to make sure that the work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible whilst also keeping disruption to a minimum.
“Our team will be knocking on doors in the area to speak to local people and answer any questions they may have. We’re very aware of the effect that our work can have on communities and commuters and we’re working closely with Caerphilly County Borough Council to get this essential work done while causing the least inconvenience.”
