After water got into the gas pipes and affected supplies to the people of Bryn at the beginning of the year, local people are now being invited to view the plans for Wales & West Utilities’ scheme which will bring a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.
Plans for the £425,000 investment programme will be available at a public drop-in event, being held at:
- Tuesday 4 August 2015 at Bryn Community Centre, Maesteg Road, Bryn, SA13 2RY between 2pm and 6pm
Members of the project team will be on hand at the drop-in event to answer any questions on the project and people are encouraged to come along and see for themselves what is planned.
Work for this essential scheme started on 13 July on the hillside to the east of the village, near the golf course, and is expected to take approximately 23 weeks to complete. Depending on progress across the hillside, work is anticipated to start in Bryn village in late-August.
Work in Bryn will start outside the Royal Oak pub, which will be open as usual for the duration of the scheme. New gas pipes will be lay down Varteg Row before moving into Cwm Farteg, Galltcwm Terrace, Station Terrace and Welfare Avenue.
So that the general public, road users and our workforce are kept safe whilst the scheme is ongoing traffic lights may be used and it may be necessary to temporarily close Varteg Row. Access will be maintained at all times for residents and emergency services
In advance of work Wales & West Utilities has worked with the local authority highways department which has agreed all traffic management plans.
Some bus routes may also be affected and further information can be obtained from the local bus company.
First Line Manager Danny Beynon will be the project manager for this scheme and said:
“We know how difficult it was for those who were affected by water in the gas pipes and as soon as gas supplies were back on, we started planning work to make sure that the area continued to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas now and into the future.
“We were very grateful for the patience and support of the local community in February and hope they bear with us as we complete this essential work.
“We’ve worked closely with the local authority in planning this work and while traffic lights and road closures may be needed, this is the only way to do our essential work safely.”
This work is part of the company’s multi-million-pound 30-year mains replacement programme, across Wales and the south west, which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 metres of buildings are being replaced with new long-lasting plastic pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years.
