£160,000 gas pipe investment scheme comes to Ystradgynlais

Wales & West Utilities is working on a £160,000 gas pipe investment scheme in the Brecon Road area of Ystradgynlais which will make sure that local homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply to the area for years to come.

Starting late October, the work will involve replacing more than a kilometre of old metal gas pipes with new plastic ones along the main Brecon Road. The essential scheme is planned to complete during the beginning of February.

Wales & West Utilities has worked closely with Powys County Council in planning the work, and to make sure there is the minimum disruption to the local community and road users, it has been split into several phases.

• Phase 1 involves laying 720 metres of new gas pipe on Brecon Road between 214 and 2 Bryn Cerdd Villas. This work will start on 24 October and should take around six weeks to complete. So the local community, road users and our colleagues are kept safe whilst the work is ongoing, the start of this phase will see three-way traffic lights in place at the junction of Tanywaun and 369 Brecon Road. The remainder of the work will then involve the use ofrolling two-way traffic lights.
• Phase 2 will involve laying approximately 400 metres of new gas pipe on Brecon Road northbound from the roundabout leading to the A4067. Taking approximately five weeks to complete, it will start on 5 December and will also involve working on the Caerbont Enterprise Park.
• Phase 3 will start on 16 January and involve three weeks of work to lay 160 metres of new gas pipe between the roundabout and 2 Bryn Cerdd Villas. Traffic management plans are being developed for this phase.

Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for South Wales, Francis Kirk, said:

“We know that working on roads like these is not ideal, but it really is essential to support the area into the future. We’ll be working to make that the work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible whilst also keeping disruption to local people to a minimum.

“Replacing old metal gas pipes is a complex job and depending on what we find when we start work, our plans may need to change. We will make sure local people are kept updated of our progress.
